The Hair Life-Cycle

The hair life-cycle. Problems. Vitamins.

A hair grows approx. 1-2 cm each month. And a new hair starts growing from the hair papilla which is in the base of hair bulb. In adrenal cortex the cells split and multiply. The zone that attaches the hair papilla is called the matrix. Among the all cells of hair bulbs you would also find melanocytes – the special cells that provide the natural hair color.

Every hair life-cycle has 3 stages 2 – 5 years long each. Every hair follicle is genetically programmed to produce 25 – 27 new hairs by individual schedule. That’s why all our hairs at the same time are in different stages. Ex. 85% are actively growing, 1% is resting and the rest 14% are falling off.

Scientists describe 3 stages of the hairs life-cycle. The Anagen (or active growth stage) is represented by constant cells split in the hair follicle matrix where new cells are pushed towards the head skin. It lasts 2 – 5 years. The Katagen (or rest stage) is characterized by the slow down or complete stop of cells splitting so follicle “gets asleep”. Here the bulb starts disconnecting the papilla which lasts for 1 – 3 weeks. Finally, The Telogen is a period when the cells are not renewed for 3 months when telogen bulb completely disconnects the dermal papilla and moves to the head skin top. Here the new hair grows and the old one falls off.

The main and the scariest problem for both men and women is “alopecia” in simple words baldness. Though, most people panic for don’t differ alopecia from the regular hear drop off. The daily norm for hair loss is 70 – 100 hairs and it’s normal. Sometimes an intensive hair drop is caused by the depression. Different types of alopecia need different treatments. The regular hair loss is caused by the seasons change, depression, and various diets (including vegetarian ones that lead to it 100%).
